When I had 'ego' prblem : My IIM A GD PI 2006

Well so it happened IIM A interview.
Well I will have to admit I ws impressed by all the three professers in panel. They seemed the perfect people to learn from in India as I am already at IIT and don't have much high opinion of most of the profs here. Also in C iterview profs appeared to me just that profs. But here the way they talked, responded and took care to see only right people get into THEIR institute really impressed me.

well GD topics is well known by now that sari shop thing. Our GD was very civilised partly becuase 5 of us from the IIT and knew each other but there was no pact vact thing.I contributed the majoe point of change in commission structure while the group was lost in fixing discipline issues. Moreover group tried to give some peole responsibility to boos over their colleagues with same pay which I vehemently opposed.Another proposal to put up boards annoncing price ranges was shot down by me becoz it clearly offends the senitivities of low range customers. taking customer feedback and checking thier yielding ratio was also put forward by me and won group's approval. On the whole I was satisfied with this GD compared to calcutta one, but one regret unconciously I shot down every proposal of one of the member who was nnot that assertive but accepted all of them when put forward y another member.I really feel sorry for this.Because it means I bossed over one who was weak and surrendered to assertive people.

well none of us could write summary completely because they snatched the papers.

PI::

two earlier persons had stress interview so I was pretty preapred for that but mine was very cordial. When I entered they asked me to shut the door when I proceeded to do so,one of them said don't shut it completely and laughter ,I joined meekly.
I take the seat
P1: anshul so give us your documents to us so that you stop worrying about them during interview.( I checked which one was front side and handed it to him.he playfully distributed all the components to other members. One got hold of my form, other one transcript and third one certificates.)
P1: so did you talk to other candidates about what we were asking?
Me: yes to tthe first one in this panel.
P1: what did he say?
Me:(I was about to say stress but desisted ) blah blah some derivation of comp science
P2: you did not bother about it as u r not from comp science
Me(gleefully):yes
P2: you did not ask to anybody else
Me: sir I amthe 3rd one so 2nd person has just left.
P2: no no other panels.
Me: (rather sheepishly) Sir I thought I should bother about my panel only.
P1: gud.

P3( old guy he was froom lectrical engg I guess):
So why do you want to do MBA after M tech and not working in the industry?
Me: blah blah high level entry better perspective
P3: you don't sound convince are u convinced urself
Me: ( well I am not actually) yes I am this is what I think it may not sound convincing but it si truth.( i was about to say I don't want to give bokish answer but then once again desisted)
P2: (khadoos) so u r an instrumentation engineer.
Me: no sir elctrical and instrumentation ( i was not confident of instru fundas but was confident about elctrical, well my worst fears came true)
P2: so let us design an ECG sensor to measure a pulse of x duration y magnitude at z distance from chest.
we had long discussion along magnetic sensors.I could not satisfy him with my concept but gave him enough indication that i know the prerequisites and understand all possible scenorias.
so he decidedto give me a second chance
P2: let us design anothe sensor you ewant to know whether interview of your friend has ended here or not from outside without any accoustic device.
Me : RFID (tried to give him a bait)
P2 : ( refused t otake) no the moment he finishes.
Me: okay put some transducer on his chair as soo n as he gets up yuo get a wireless signal.( my mistake I could use pressure sensor but let's see)
P2 : what frequency
Me: any it should not interfere with things operating in the room
P2: you decide that
Me: ojkay radio waves
P2 : what frequency
Me : that needs to be work out
P2: ork out
Me; okay they have wavelength of 5-12 metres so ytou know c and can get the frequency
P2: thats a wide range ,tell me exact
Me: ( speechless) i don't know
P2: have you heard about WAN blutooth
Me: I have but don't know exactly hoeww they work.( gadhe once I ccame out of room i remebered frequency hopping thing to avoid interfernece and increase bandwidth but damage was done.)
P2; you are from electrical na so it also involves communication you should know this things..
Me: ( wahi purana kissa) No sir In KGP it is only electrical .here both electrical and electronics are separate .At other places they are same.
P2: okay okay
P3: forwards a sheet of parer to me
Me: i have one alreeady sir
P3: no I have something for you
Now I look at the paer ,This guy is devil within 5 minuteds of knowing iam from elctrical he has made a complex LCR circuit and asks me to write KVL and KCL for this.At first I don't get him but then peacefully writesthem
P3: now how do you solve that
Me: using differential equations
P3: solve it
Me: ( slightly puzzled as ihad completely forgotton particular and complementary integral then strikes to me laplace bhai) Well it is already differential equation and we can have an easy approach by laplace transform if we know initial conditions.
P3: do it
Me: ( iski pyas kab bujhegi) : starts taking transgform one is integral
P3: now you are using a formula derive it
Me: (goes to do that)
P1: what is laplce transform
Me: it is a kind of mapping
P2: what kind of
Me: well it is a mapping from t domain to s domain
P3: how do u evaluate it
I wrote the formula but follishly put a condition of continuous function which was demolishe d by P3 and I had to eat humble pie.
P3: now derive integration vala formula
I proceeded and had idea that I ahve to use two variables but somehow could not make at the moment while coming to KGP back i figured complete derivation but it was too late.Actually i did not try to think while P# was giving me sufficent hints.Advice to all engineers they do give you ssufficient hints you should be able to pick them up
Me: sitr i don't remeber derivation at the moment
All ofthem in chorus: but you are elctrical engg you should know
Me: well it is a mathematical too land we use this tool and I know how to use tool.
P2: but you don't know how to make it
Me: not at present
P1: so you have written lot of quizzing thing in your form do you stil ldo all this tihngs
Me: I try to do as time permits and opportunities exist
P1: so you should know everything about everytihng being a quizzer
Me: ( kya main robot hoon) Well I try to know but afterall I am a human
P2; Do you follow cricket
Me: ( truthfully, I have not seen a single match after India's defeat by Zimbabawe in 1999 world cup)) I don't
P1;( thinks i am lying) : tell me difference between doosra and googly
Me:( what the hell is this why don't world believe in truth speaking people): well i don't know exactly but murlidharan bowls doosra and all others google I guess.
P2: what murlidharan is doosra???(laughs)
Me: ( you rasckal you just want to laught at people) but pe pitches in clarifies what i said.
P1: tell me anytihng else you follow
Me: Sir sports or any thing( give me a chance to prove myself )
P1: anything
ME: well Indian culture, history, economics ,political science( no it wil open a pandora's box) ,politics sir.
P1: tell me difference between Indian and USA govrnments
ME: explained parliamentary and presidential form. How you can win lection in USA even without hving majority votes I India it is not like that.P3 pitches in and gives me sufficint hints that in india laso it is possible.I take his hints and end up saying firat past post system etc.Theni dwell upon how US president can appoint anybody minsiter while we get old scums to head important ministry.
P2;Who is S&T minister
ME: kapil sibbal
P2: what is his profession
Me: he is a criminal criminal lawyer
everybody laughs i am happy that they share my viewpoint
P2 : then according to you he should not be S&T minister
ME: (protesting) no sir I just said person should possess basic skill set and sibbal has that.moreover i believe that govt is truly run by bureaucrates not minister .Explained why ithink so .told about "yes Minister" .but they did not picjk up bait.( they r really intelligent i will hve to confess).
P1" sp bureaucrates are responsible to whom
ME: to their political masters IN THEORY and explained their security of tenure and whole concept of accounatability or lack of it.
P1: so you don't like this tihng.
ME: no I am perfectly comfortable with bureaucrates running govt.
P!:(sarcasticxally) so I n USA corporate controls them
Me: I don't know about USA sir.( well obvioulsy they don't moreover thr it is specialist while we have a generalist system .I am real fool to not tell all these things there.)
P1: so you are from MP tell me sometihng about it
I wondere what to tell what not then explained lack of development and its possible reasons.they were visibly impressed.I told about laid back nature of our people. He asked the reason.I put forward my own theory of original populace being tribal and marwaris, gujaratis and marathi people being outsider and not emotinoal attachment, resources concentrted in one reginon ,no powerful political leadre at centre after 1947.
P1: before independence
Me : well even before independence no one .Talked about british policyy towards central provinces
P1: after independ
ME: well PT dwarkaprasad mishra father of Brajes mishra( they are both real chankyas but it seems these people have not heard about them)
At this point P2 goes to P1 and whispers sometihng to P1 about my resume. ican guess wht it is as I had written me bien hindi literature buff but no question came as sadly today;s elite doesnot read Hindi. Then i ahd written my weakness as sleeping too much and speaking fast or in accomlishments i being a RSS swayamsevak or involvement with youth organisation at campus or the incident which affected you beingrelated to hindu-muslim question. ireall y exopected a discussion along these lines but it seems they had sensed that here they won't be able to get over me.
P1so you have NNC B cretificate not C why?
ME: explained
P2: about placement at KGP and lehman package ( first guy had job with lehman)
I expalined
P1: so you seem to be more conversed with politics why did you choose engineering do u tihnk it was a mistake.
ME: ( well it was) : no sir I nejoy engineering It is just that being a responsible citizen i try to keep my eyes open to surroundings..
it is almost end
P1: you don't have all the certificates you have mentioned
ME: no sir they r thre starts counting by name
P1: well did german embassay had quiz in hindi
ME : they had in both hindi and english I being in Hindi medium went for hindi one.
P3: (reads my continuously dropping CG and asks reason .I tell him project etc thing but he doesn't agree then I say extracurricullar activities.HE says at IIM A we have so many of the then how will you mangae.I said I will learnto manage tihngs. He siad but u have ont in five yrs. I said i.e. why I am joining mangement course. They all laughed and asked me to take a toffee).

Sothis was it. I would like to have comments ( imprtial) as to whether I stand a chance. One thing MY CG is 8.1 and last time lowest CG of KGP guy admitted was 8.5.But i did not take any coaching for CAT and I mentioned this tihng in form.

15 April - Hotel Monarch - Panel 3 - Morning session

Reached Just in time after Auto whcih I took did not know where the Hotel Monarch was.( I was staying with a friend in Indiranagar).

There were people for four panels.Seemed like Mela.

GD topic: In business situation Rearview mirror is clearer than frontview.
mirror
5 minutes to write your thoughts before GD. Did a good job as this was a repeat topic ( thanks pagalguy). Mentioned some real incident from my worklife.

10 minutes for discussion. One very loud fellow jumped the gun & he kept on interferring with everyone like but we should not forget. After a time it was repetion & people starte talking aobut mangment books & theories.
Came twice or thrice tried to support guys who could speak less. Becoz of this bully some other people also got agitated & whole GD was destroyed but here my work expereince came to my rescue & i made only orginal points & otherwise kept mum.Tried to stick to what I had written in sheet already.

Interview : 9th guy to be interviewed so long wait. APnel 1 was very fast & they had finsihed when 7th candidate was being interviewed in ours. while panle 2 was slowest .Ours was okay.

When entered was asked to latch the door .
two people : P1 I guess Mr Panigrahi who is MTEch in agri from IIT KGP.
other fellow I did not get time to see his face as he was engrossed with my certis.
P1: U r from indore why it is famous?
I told aobut Indore being Namkin capital & potential as iinvestment hub .Why not developed & then
P1;who are NRI & PIOs?
A sequel to first question as when I told him aobut destination of Indore's namkeen exports.
P1: who is Vindod Gupta? About VGSOM? Why is KGP famous?
I said railway staiton , IIT , Air bases nearby , Tata bearing factory but he kept on asking anytihng else .Seems was trying to stress me out.
P1: difference between B Tech & BE?
once agian tried to stress me.
Then they started looking for some mangment course which I had taken.Zeroed on Human behaviour In organsiation. How it is different form organisation behaviour?
First I said they are same ,then said no & tried to justify.
P1: ( sequel to earlier question) what is tactic? what is strategy? are they same ? & endless stream of quaetions but I stood my ground after giving one opinion.
P1: u r with Medical SBU.why it is called SBU? how it si different from OD?
Gave him good funda aobut L&T organisation structure but gave wrong answer as to why we switched to SBU model.

P2: first time looks out of my certificates .So waht is nature of your work?
I promptly put forward my work exp certificate detailing my responsibilites.
( it was helpful though they did not ask for one)
Then said you are anyway doing what we wil lteach you or what you will do after MBA?
I gave usual gyan & pitched in with example of one M&A study I had done at workpalce.

I nhindsight Ithink Lgive mroe importance to your profile & percentile astheir form si also very short which does not tell anything aobut you.

PS: I made it to L finally.

We were made to wait in institute's mangment faculty's library & then called for GD. 8 guys in a group.
GD : To select a candidate for a social sector organization

My performance : Not active participant , supported Lavanya’s claim as physical discrimination would be wrong. Supported fellow without degree as he would stick to us. (provisional job) & once came out strongly against all people disqualifying Obese candidate by telling that is not it ironical that we are discriminating among candidates on physical ground while running a soacial sector organisation.

PI :
We were called in random order. I guess it was the one who spoke most in GD was caleed last. I was third last.

I filled up the form only after reaching the venue in the mornig so feviquick had elft some mark on form her & there.

GD: Dr gupta approved a drug oging agianst unanimous rejection by other members under pressure of patients' relatives, drug failed now what to do with Dr gupta?
Good enough. Started. Gave various points such as this is accredition agency so they can't really take steps to mitigate the side effects. What Dr Gupta did was perfectly within rules so need to take a relook at rules giving more power to scientific community. Committee's recommendation are accepted by pateint community so Dr Gupta made a mistake .In medical profession even one mistake is enough to wash all gud past track records.
His job requires him to work indpenednt of pressure group tactics .Made a point reagrding provisional approval & limited releases.

Super civilised GD .Everyone was giving everyone else time. Being 7 people helped our cause a lot.

Third one to be interviewed. The guy before me was made to sing karnataka Music ( his hobby ) so I rehearsed three- four hindi poe ms before going inside. ( My hobby is hindi poetry).
P1 - Dr Ojha , P2 - Prof Padmini Srinivasan

PI : favourite subject?
Separater?
PE : project?
Real life application? ( my project was on power electronics but my specialisation is in instrumentation)
Trains have motors? ( topic was magnetic trains ,I said now u r going to mechanical domain .Then he siad u should know this thing .To this ireplied one shoudl be master in one's own domain similar to pint I made in GD aobut Dr Gupta)
Job what u do?
Valuation can be right? ( I did an M&A study at job. P1 said u can never do correct valuation .I said thr r always some hiddne synergy which only insiders know , not normal public .Gave example of one suct M&A at our workplace. Then he said private scompanies do valuation no one craeates a nosie , but when govt. does it people cry hoarse. I said You & I can't question valuations by Tata or Vodafone as we are not their shareholders but can question GOI as we vote for it. Led to a good discussion)

Economics ? industrial economics?what they taught you?

P2:

History ? why required? Book of neerad choudhary? ( my hobby)
Context?
Academic flexible? ( I had mentioned in SOP)
Prediction on cricket team?
Marwari? Why not successful in marwar itself?( I had mentioned in other reason )
Why not reduce duty ? consumer is the king? ( I mentioned about duty being reduced on medical products in budget harming our business .I am with medical industry)

Suggestions for indian railway

recently came across this site where they are asking public suggestion.

went to the online forum and some of the suggestions are very good.
thought it would be great to compile them at single place for use of everyone.

• Facility also given to the Waitlisted passengers to opt for Tatkal scheme without cancelling the waitlisted ticket or option to be given at the time of booking for upgrading to Tatkal Scheme through online use without approach the counter or re booking online
• THE TRAIN RUNNING INFORMATION THROUGH INDIANRAIL.GOV.IN SHOULD GIVE MORE ACCURATE TIME AND DATA UPDATION SHOUD BE MORE FREQUENT.IF POSSIBLE IT SHOULD GIVE THE REAL TIME STATUS OF THE RUNNING TRAIN.IT WILL NOT ONLY SAVE TIME AND MONEY OF THE CUSTOMER BUT ALSO PLAN ACCORDINGLY AND ALSO AVOID UNNECESSARY CROWDNESS AT THE STATION.SIMILARY TELEPHONE ENQUIRY SYSTEM 139 SHOUD PROVIDE REAL TIME RUNNING STATUS OF THE TRAIN
• it would be very useful to provide total number of berths/seats in each class of a train under all the quotas seperately to help persons making reservations through internet decide optimally. e.g. if we enquire for train no. 2901, the result is ::: Gujarat Mail : 1A;2A;3A;SL Total Berths : 30;120;400;700 General Quota : 24;90;260;500 Tatkal Quota : 6;26;120;160 Ladies Quota : 0;2;6;10 Lower Berth Quota - 0;2;4;8 Defence Quota - 0;0;4;10 Special Quota - 2;4;6;14
• irctc should adopt the scheme of cinema or bus booking there is a representation of seat in symbolic form so u can easily find which berth is available or filled .he can choose the berth buy clicking the icon of unreserved seat like in cinema or bus booking online. it will help in making decision . irctc can charge 10 rs for extra charge for getting choice seat it will generate the revenue and increase the satisfaction of passenger. please take this issue seriously it has utmost importance.
• I believe either SMS or printed paper ticket should be considered as option while going for e-ticket. Since everyone uses mobile nowadays and it wont be a problem for people to receive simple text SMS with PNR and seat number, which they can use as replacement for printed paper ticket. Traveller can eihter show one of it to TTR along with identiy proof. It will very much pay way for greener planet.
• Train departure / arrival timing updates on mobile no given during Ticket booking will immensely help the public in managing their timings well . This will not only help public in saving precious time but will avoid avoidable crowds at plateform as well as parkings
• There is immediate need for online tracking of status of complaints lodged with TTE / Coach attendant especially pertaining to Robbey / Theft / drugging the passengers etc on moving train. Current system helps in handing over complaint form to TTE / attendant / RPF personnel but no clarity on actions taken on such complaints
• While reservation tickets can be obtained via internet through IRCTC. The service should also be extended for non-reserved second class tickets including MSTs. It will help a lot of daily/weekly passengers who commute between workplace and residence.
• Most of the LCD TV Screens installed ind most of the stations except MADURAI Rly Station only show adds and other entertainments rather it should display the arrival and departure informations of trains as is being done at MADURAI Station. This will help the hearing impaired disabled persons a lot.
• Internet based reservation tickets booked through IRCTC should print the fares inclusive of IRCTC commissions and bank charges. This will help us to get the total money reimburshed from the employer.
• Ihe Internet based Reservation through IRCTC should have the facility for onward reservations and return journey reservations as available in Booking Counters.
• Internet Booking of the Railway tickes should be encouraged by waving off the commissions and bank charges as the customer has to pay the cyber caffee charges and the railway saves on manpower and stationary.
• Sir, Tickets should have bar code and every TTE and railway coach should have bar code reader. If all these get real time. The time passenger will come he just need to swipe the ticket and it will update the data and provide latest information to the central location. Much more convenient for TTE to allocate seats, better monitoring of usage of railway passes.
• It is requested that all the quotas must be abolished and the bookings must be done on first cum first serve basis. With introduction of other means of transports now i feel this ancient system of quotas is killing the vast revenue opportunities which should otherwise go to railways but is pocketed by corrupt railways officials in allotment of seats en route to passengers who are in dire need of reservations for a hefty sums or to the persons who are nowhere in reservation charts or these seats goes waste denying the rightful opportunities to the bonafide passengers. Else the system of auto up gradation must be applied 3-4 hours before departure and once upgraded the rest of the seats must be opened for auctions by displaying it along with the schedule chart instead of tatkal .this will not only help in additional revenue generation but shall help in economizing and planning of rolling stock
• Planning of the complete route and return booking must be available with IR.Today, we have to book 3-5 different bookings for the same journey which really troubles the consumer. The IR must introduce system so that the consumer can plan his travel from one place to another and return in one go instead of multiple journeys if direct train does not exist
• For people with RAC/Waiting list, please provide 2 facilities. 1. An SMS/E-Mail facility to inform them automatically if their status is confirmed/RAC. 2. The station at which they can expect confirmation if they continue their journey with WL. This would reduce corruption at TTE level. I normally find people lobbying the TTE for sake of seats and few people excercising their money power as well
• each coach should have two talking device installed properly. it should be used by the passengers for getting service related grievances that railway provide on journey. communication should be linked to the srvice center from where railway personal can be instructed accordingly. often getting help from onboard resource person is not easy and one has no option if they do not act
• make arrangement for passanger to take print out of ticket via PNR number from any where like airlines ticket it make esier
• I am a regular user of ticket booking. If we are not able to get a ticket on a specific day for a train, the system should suggest alternative trains available between the two places. This will be very useful to the customers and reduces a lot of time which is spent on querying for each train. This alos reduces load on irctc server
• Tatkal should be opened up in slabs on each of the last 5 days and NOT all at once
• There are two suggestion regarding railway reservation for physically and mentally handicapped persons. 1. Based on the railway concession certificate issued by the authorized medical doctor, a unique number for the disabled person with validity date and concession amount/percentage should be issued by railways. A nominal charge can be collected for the same. 2. This unique number will help the disabled person or the person making reservation for disabled person from embarrassing question and various queries of the booking staff each time when booking the railway ticket. 3. Further, this unique number can be utilized for extending online reservation facility through IRCTC by suitably modifying IRCTC program. 4. This will bring the disabled person more close to the society and bring a confidence in them being treated at par with the common person. 5. This will also help in saving the time of the railways as well as the disabled person. With regards
• Our Company provides the Prepaid Electronic Recharge system to many Telecom Operators in India. On an average there is one such Prepaid topup retailer per 2Sq Km in India. A system/process similar to the Electronic Prepaid topup can be used by Retailers across India to book tickets via the mobile phone for customers. The Customer will then get his PNR via SMS and he can board the train with his PNR & Identification
• We can have the digital display system to know the station and next station arrival time details so that it will alert the passengers travelling in night time
• I am dev i always travel in sleeper class,i always face problem in mobile charging point. Without mobile lots of work keeps on pending. So i request u to give at least 4 mobile charging point in each cabin. I will be very thankful to u
• The loco drivers are being called as PILOT. They should communicate with the passengers through audio methods with the passengers. He should announce the arrival of a particular station 5/10 minutes earlier so that passengers be alert to alight. During night time, when passengers are to get down at stations, they are forced to wake up for hours together.
• When an ordinary ticket purchased at reservation counter do not require us to carry an identity card, an e-ticket holder has to carry one. Impersonation takes place even while buying a ticket from the reservation counter. We are helping railways in reducing the rush at the counter and doing the data entry duties. Further, we are paying extra also. Why we should insist for an identity proof? I think we should dispense with this cumbursome stipulation. Think over it.
• Sir, I am a frequent traveller in 2nd AC , shatabdi, Rajdhani trains in connection with my job. Most of the time my journey terminates at New Delhi or Nizamuddin. Sometime on my way to outside Rly station, I listen that some local train is going to my place Shahdara. But purchasing a ticket from New Delhi to Shahdara at New Delhi or NZM is a nightmare experience. On current booking long queues are there, One who is alone with suitcase in hand hardly can buy a local ticket in 5 minutes. I have never a sucesses in this matter and ultimately I have to take auto which is not a pleasant experience especially in Delhi. Why not Railway give an option at the time of booking of ticket whether local train facility is required and Rs.10 may be charged from him extra. Or allow him to travel in local train upto a distance of 20 KM. (for that ticket is only 4/- now a days) Even otherwise purchasing ticket from current booking at big stations like NDLS, DLI, NZM, GZB, DSA is a big problem
• Sir , can there be small trains which have less than 5 compartments (if we could redeuse the engine size).the rail remains free for a long time and these trains would be very use full for the short runs. I think raliway will again increase its income and popularity if such trains are introduced. i also think that railway could send each such train after every 1/2hour (u r the people to think that) and still these compartments will be crowdy. This also will reduce the fuel intake of our country if the engines are electrical
• THE VALID IDENTITY REQUIREMENTS FOR e-TICKET TRAVELLERS SHOULD INCLUDE SCHOOL/INSTITUTION idS ALSO AS WE SENT OUR CHILDREN BELOW 18 YEARS BY TRAIN UNESCORTED BY ELDERS AND THE TICKET EXAMINER DEMANDS FOR VOTERS ID/PAN CARD/PASSPORT/EMPLOYMENT ID CARD WHICH A MINOR MAY/WILL NOT HAVE
• Railways must have POS machine for Credit/Debit Card swapping so as to reduce cash transactions along with enhance efficiency and safety
• When a fine imposed on a passenger for illegal travel (due to unintentional mistake made by the passenger) or for any other reasons; can the passenger get a Tracking ID for the fine imposed and paid money? Most of the time Passengers are not aware of all rules and regulations. Due to this some dirty employees of Indian Railway takes advantage of it and also don t forget to harass the passengers. The receipt provided by those people can be very much a bogus one. Provision of such Tracking Id after paid the fine will help to track that the money paid by the passenger towards fine is really going to Indian Railway (Government of India) not to those dirty Indian Railway Individual
• Online booking and cancellation of unreserved ticket will help the passengers and Railway a lot to avoid rush on booking counters.Make it conveniet and user friendl
• The napkins supplied in upper class coaches is sometimes horrible to use. Instead why not the railways provide a new napkins with a beautiful logo of railways for the passengers to carry it and charge it in the fare itself. It vll b extremely higenic when we r in constant fear of communicable deseases.
• (1)There should be a special type of seat or birth for a baby in every coach.this time it is terrible to travel in the train with a child baby aged below 6 year for the long journy. (2) in the toilet there is no mug for the wash in sleeper class.should provide a mug. (3)automatic e ticket cancelation should be stoped immediately.we have made the ticket after paying and at the time of departure of the train ,the ticket is canceled without acknowling me.is this the proper way.let if anybody have an emergency then
• All reserved passangers in Sleeper Class may also be provided with the Bed Roll on nominal Charges.A deposit of fixed amount can be taken as secutiy and a Token may be issued to regular passangers who can obtain bed rolls after submitting the token and same can be collected on returning the bed roll.
• When it becomes clear that a train will depart significantly late from its Starting point, the Railway should send SMS to all the passengers who book their ticket electronically. For electronic reservations, Railways can easily keep the Mobile phone no. of the passengers, where the SMS can be send (this is already done in the case of Airlines).
• if we want to file a claim for E tickets on the internet. thre is no way a person can expect a refund with in 90 days..the average time of getting refund is more than 150 days that is beyond the time limit. i have proof which states that my TDR ispending since Jan and Hune and it been over 5 months and nothing has been done. Create or improve the Tdr refund time atleast if you can not improve anything. 2) RAC needs to be withdrawl because person pays full ticket and gets half of the seat and chances of getting a seat is 99.9 per less.
• Lot of manpower, stationary and time are wasted in Railway for preparation, accountal and maintenance of Pass and PTOs for staff and officers. Instead of depending upon age old system of paper made Pass/PTO, a multipurpose electronic Card carrying personal particulars, Pass/PTO account etc. may be issued to each officer/ employee. The PRS software may be upgraded to read data from this Card so that ticket Reservation is made possible against it and automatically, pass/PTO account is updated then and there itself. This will also enable Railway to keep a check on the menace of over use of passes by Railway employees in connivance with Reservation and Ticket checking staff.
• Presently PNRs of travelled tickets are flushed out of the sytem within a short period. Claim settlement by Govt/PSUs depends on submission of original tickets. I-tickets in original are submitted. However e-tickets (whether original or copy) are same and in order to reduce fradulent/false claims, the following changes should be carried out: 1) PNRs of travelled e-tickets should be kept in the system for longer period (say 90 days) 2) Or there should be some technological system to check the travelled tickets
• Kindly introduce the benifit of telescopic fare for e-tickets (booked through online) when the onward journey is by two (connecting)trains. (e.g. direct ticket from Kacheguda to Mangalore cannot be booked online with the benefit of telescopic rates. Instead two separate tickets kacheguda to bangalore and Bangalore to Mangalore are to be booked.)This will increase the online bookings and reduce the rush at the counters, as presently this (telescopic rate benefit)is applicable for the tickets booked through railway reservation counters only
• In India maximum number of population come to Indian railways when it comes to travelling is there any possibility of creating a database of people by giving them an Icard which can be further used as an account card & addition of various bank details can be added further & this can be used for various government purposes like the intiative of Unique Id by Ministry of IT & GOI .This will enhance the further customer data base in order provide various offers to people with high frequency of travelling similiar type of schemes were established in Airlines market to give encouragement to higher frequency of travelling

Why we never hear about such people

Cerebral malaria can be fatal, but people have been known to recover from it. Anuradha Ghandy, however, didn't stand a chance. Already weakened by the sclerosis when she walked into the hospital, it was too late. Within 24 hours, she was gone. By the time her vast circle of friends was informed on the evening of April 12, the 54-year-old had already been cremated. Better this than death by 'encounter', after prolonged torture. For that was the fate we feared this Naxalite could not escape.

That Anu managed to evade arrest for so long, was an indicator of the ruthlessness with which she effaced her identity. This, of course, meant isolating herself from all those who would have given up everything to nurse her. There was another way she could have recovered, even while underground. Anu could have followed medical advice and given herself the break her body so badly needed. For someone so important to the Party (CPI-Maoist), it might well have allowed it. But that wasn't her style.

Just climbing stairs had become an ordeal five years ago. Yet, days before her death, she was in some jungle where malaria was probably an inevitability. Anuradha Ghandy, I learnt after her death, was a senior Maoist leader. Her political career spans the first radical student outfit in Mumbai (PROYOM) in the '70s, and the armed dalams of Adivasi women in Bastar. Certain that like her comrades in Chandrapur, she too would be implicated in false cases and arrested, Anu went underground some years ago.

When I first met her in 1970, Anuradha Shanbag was the belle of the ball in Mumbai's Elphinstone College. A petite bundle of energy, bright eyes sparkling behind square glasses, her ready laughter, near-backless cholis and coquettish ways had everyone eating out of her hands, professors included. Elphinstone then was an intellectual hub. The Bangladesh war was just over, drought and famine stalked Maharashtra. Naxalism had come to Mumbai, at that time the industrial capital of the country. Anu, majoring in Sociology, was everywhere—inviting Mumbai's leading radicals to talk about the reasons for the drought, putting up posters that proclaimed 'Beyond Pity' and urging students to get involved with the crisis in the countryside, defending this stand against those who felt a student's role must be limited to academics and at the most, 'social work'.

Anu was also the one to question celebrity guest speakers such as Girish Karnad, whose path-breaking plays had just hit the stage, on the link between theatre and society. And it was Anu who introduced us to that feminist bible, Germaine Greer's The Female Eunuch. Those were the days of 'parallel' cinema. Marathi amateur theatre was blossoming at Dadar's Chhabildas Hall. The Dalit Panthers had exploded into the Marathi literary scene. Adil Jussawala's New Writing In India was still making waves. Forum Against Rape, Mumbai's first feminist group, had just been founded. Anu, by then a lecturer at Wilson College, was immersed in all this. With her wide range of interests, she succeeded in linking the human rights organisation she and few others founded after Emergency with the city's intellectual ferment. Among other things, the Committee for the Protection of Democratic Rights (CPDR), demanded that the State stop acting lawlessly with Naxalites even though they rejected its laws.

Thanks to Anu's ability to talk as intelligently with George Fernandes as with Satyadev Dubey, her brother Sunil Shanbag's mentor, the cream of Mumbai's intellectuals supported this demand. Playwright Vijay Tendulkar and reformist Asghar Ali Engineer were CPDR's president and vice-president.

It was time for Anu to grow into a successful academic, the type who writes books and attends international seminars. Instead, in 1982, she left the life she loved to work in Nagpur. The wretched conditions of contract workers in the new industrial areas near Nagpur and of Adivasis in the forests of Chandrapur had to be challenged. Committed cadres were needed. In her subsequent trips to Mumbai, Anu never complained about the drastic change in her life: cycling to work under the relentless Nagpur sun; living in the city's Dalit area, the mention of which drew shudders from Nagpur's elite; then moving to backward Chandrapur. In Marxist study circles, 'declassing oneself' is quite a buzzword. From Mumbai's Leftists, only Anu and her husband Kobad, both lovers of the good life, actually did so.

Kobad's family home had been a sprawling Worli Sea Face flat; he was a Doon School product. Anu's lawyer-father may have left his family estate in Coorg to defend communists in court in the '50s, but she had never seen deprivation. Despite her own rough life, neither did Anu make us feel guilty for our bourgeois luxuries nor did she patronise us. On the few occasions she would suddenly land up over these 25 years, it was as if she had never left. She had the same capacity to laugh, even at herself, the same ability to connect, even with management types, the same readiness to indulge in women's talk. But with those closest to her, she seemed unnaturally detached. Her parents doted on her, yet she didn't take every opportunity she could to meet them. I realise why now.

Rushing to meet them whenever she came to Mumbai would have been worse than an indulgence. It would not only have eaten into the time she had for Party work, it would have also made it impossible for her family to have accepted what she saw as inevitable—an underground future. In order not to endanger her family, Anu simply disappeared from their horizon. When her father died, she couldn't go home. That was also the reason for her harsh decision never to have children, though her parents would have willingly brought them up. That was one bond she knew would draw her away from the life she had chosen.

The 'Naxalite menace', says Manmohan Singh, is the biggest threat to the country. But I remember a girl who was always laughing, and who gave up a life rich in every way to change the lives of others.

Chandigarh trip

It happens very rarely in life that you here any good things about a place and place lives up to your expectations or even exceeds it. Chandigarh would be one such place. Anything which comes close to Chandigarh in being a planned city and a pleasure to live and commute is Mysore but once again it has been hurt by usual land sharks and it still has small town feeling with no disco, mall or multiplex but Chandigarh offers best of both worlds. An immaculately well planned city, where even an outsider can easily make sense of directions and roads, sector wise shopping arena making life easier for shopkeepers and shop goers alike, absence of urban poverty or at least not in its visible form, roads lined with trees , lots of green space, wide roads …. What else can one ask for in urban india?
Public transport is scant though but welcomes change over gurgaon or noida or Delhi was people were less pretentious and there was healthy number of two wheelers on road. even auto wallas charged reasonable fares and I must say girls of Chandigarh have a completely justified reputation. It seemed as if you are among so called apsaras of heaven. Right from my receptionist, to lady on counter, to someone driving on road you could find both decent and naughty looks.

One interesting sight was a couple sitting on bench and doing hanky panky just near police beat box. I am note sure if they were aware of what they were doing and what was the place and as expected a policeman came and slapped guy hard. Rock garden is a refugee to love torn couples as well .There one could see married couples seeking some privacy, college or school going students bunking classes and looking for corners to some hanky panky. One such couple was carrying book of engineering drawing which I followed in my IIT first years as well and it suddenly struck me that what was I doing in that age apart from exchanging mails with prerna.

Now at wrong side of 20 what I can do apart from observing things and ruminating.
But even after planning there are some obvious eye sores e.g. planning and deciding areas for commercial activities is good but all buildings look alike .I do not know if this is by default or design.
Traffic islands don’t have carefully maintained lawns like in west but yes there are rickshaw lanes but still safety of pedestrians take a back seat.
Ubiquitous gajar ghaas can be seen populating these traffic islands as well as sprouting in rock garden , major part of which is closed but still it is a place worth visiting and so is the sukhna lake.

Overall a nice trip will love to have a chance to work in this city for longer times as this was first time in my life that heavy rain did not create any problems ( it always creates if I am in indore, KGP, Mumbai, Bangalore or gurgaon)
